JUANA MOLINA – “Tres Cosas”
Domino, 2004
The songs on this album would work on half the shows at KZSU. Try it even if you don’t play “world music”…
Molina is an Argentine singer-songwriter and TV comedian (!) who writes quiet, pretty melodies. Singing in a slow, drawn-out way, and accompanying herself on acoustic guitar (she also produced and mixed the album), Molina takes us on a trip down whispery lanes and through scenarios distorted like funhouse mirrors, chaperoned throughout by low-key electronic noodlings. It’s odd, but nice.
Fo’s picks: folksy - 2, 9, 13; spacey – 4, 6, 11
1. slow, delicate, and a bit tinkly
2. cute and folksy, just gorgeous
3. singsong melody bends, twists
4. layered atmospheric instrumental
5. monotone vox, tweaky keyboards
6. plain vox in strange synth-scape
7. simple, pretty, dreamlike tune
8. folky guitar, add backing vocals
9. straightforward acoustic, nice
10. slow, voice & repetitive guitar
11. spacey, echo, wordless vox
12. strange groans, folky later on
13. moody solo piano & French voc
