JOÃO GILBERTO – “In Tokyo”

One of the inventors and greatest stars of bossa nova, recorded in a live solo performance in 2003. João’s voice sounds pretty creaky on some of the slow tracks, but it’s a funny thing about bossa: that sort of voice doesn’t hurt (it can even help). And it isn’t an issue on the faster numbers anyway.
These familiar classics are stripped of strings, saxophones, and the other usual trappings, allowing the fragile essence of the songs to shine through. On the other hand, that also means that every track sounds more or less the same. Just pick a favorite song (or one you don’t know) and go for it…
All nice. If I must have a favorite, I pick #13.
More upbeat, happy, or playful: 1, 3, 6, 8, 11
Slower, more meditative or wistful: 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, 15
Somewhere in between: 7, 12, 13, 14
