Of course I had to review this one...
SEKOU BEMBEYA DIABATE – “Guitar Fö”
Discorama, 2004
From Guinea in West Africa, Sekou Diabate is an influential (and outstanding) guitarist and co-founder of the popular group Bembeya Jazz, which has been on the scene since 1961. This disc combines some favorites from the band’s repertoire with a few newer originals. Diabate is joined by 2 rhythm guitars, bass, and percussion. Only three tunes have vocals (4,7,9), so the emphasis is fully on the liltingly lyrical guitar work.
Fo’s picks: 5, 9, 11 (2, 6, 8, 10 are also nice)
1. midtempo groove, satisfied sound
2. a ballad with drive, lovely guitar
3. medium, very steady & even
4. relaxed, duet male vox, a bit dull
5. bright uptempo guitar showcase
6. sweet medium ballad, tropical feel
7. slow love song w/Hawaiian guitar!
8. relaxed rumba for a lazy day
9. bluesy, slow w/some fast breaks
10. laid-back and very pleasant
11. quiet, nostalgic solo guitar.
