Norwegian designer/producer Kim Hiorthoy is back with a slew of new EPs. This particular EP is more rambunctious than his album Hei, but the aesthetic is still recognizable: simple (but not simplistic) IDM electronica consisting of fast and intricate beats with silly beep-laden melodies and samples. For better or worse, the sound is less muddled than other IDM (e.g. Sqaurepusher), which makes the whole album easier to digest.
Track 4 is as viscerally fun as electronica gets! Also try track 1.
- Captain Dee (7/04)
*1. Electronic, thin hip-hopish beat with old-school synth melody and "uh!" sample. Various other speech samples along the way. Great sparse composition – almost as if this was a videogame soundtrack. (4:43)
2. Blazing stop & start beat with Aphex Twin-esque sound pallet. Later, intensity picks up a bit and things get noisier. (9:45)
3. Tight clapping beat, smooth organ notes, various other beats, speech samples and wonky melody. Kick ass torrent of beeps midway through. (8:28)
**4. Super fast, rockin' beat and peppy, beeping melodies anchored by a repeated, child-like singing sample. I keep picturing a cute little robot dancing wildly. (8:13)
5. Goofy electronic melodies, fast drumming split up by interludes, and "woop!" samples. Humorous. (3:24)
6. Dance-y synths and beat, tweaky embellishments. This strikes me as dirty club music for robots. (7:10)
