What have Fenn O’Berg wrought? In the wake of their gorgeous songs buried in glitch and fuzz come these cheap imitators, thinking, no doubt, Well, if you can’t make out the song deep within the noise anyway, who cares how shitty it is? There’s too little songcraft (compare with Fennesz or Jesus and Mary Chain) or dynamics (compare with Merzbow or Masonna) and too much noise here to permit anything more than … er, as the title says, irritainment, from emerging. So it’s a concept in search of execution. I volunteer to take it out and shoot it. And a sad thing is that the concept has been tried so many times and executed so badly almost every one of those. So I can’t even award credit for originality in thinking up the concept. Oh, and their name is lame too. So there.
1. Squelching slide guitar and crude drumming
2. Uh, vox and keyboards distorted to fuck and filtered to about half an octave in the midrange; strangulated noise
3. Nu Wave-o synth riff
4. Testing out the settings on the old noise generator … but there’s a song in there somewhere … unfortunately, it sucks
5. Minimalist to the point of comprehensibility – you can tell what’s going on but it’s still subpar
6. Ha-ha, it’s a mouth harp against a rude noisemaker, oh dreary
7. Pretense of a song – lyrics, verse, chorus; badly recorded but otherwise not too noisy
8. Throbbing screech noise
9. Switch to lo-fi guitar rock wracked by shit production
10. “Slit Wrist Xmas” … oh, piss off already with the self-referential titles
11. Thunking guitar or something buried in screech
12. Oh, thank god it’s over
