Sparse modern-classical works for violin and/or cello. Overall a studious and mostly quiet feel, although certain phrases will LEAP into high volumes for accent, so watch out if you crank it up. The focus is on musical tones -- long notes, quick trills -- rather than on "extended" technique.
Not too stern, not too pleasant. Each piece contrasts segments of long notes against fast scribbles of music. Tracks tend to focus on one element or the other, so it's best to play at least a few of them in each sitting.
It's a two-CD set, with Disk 2 being a replica of Disk 1 recorded in "binaural" format -- meaning it's got engineering effects meant to be heard over stereo headphones.
SOLO VIOLIN
1- Fast but restrained intro
2- Slow
3,4- Some nice fast moments.
5- Quieter with a variety of textures
6- Loud slashing.
7- Serene
8- Fast, playful
9- Quiet, fast fluttering
10- Loud, solemn
11- Nervous surges
12- Fast; lots of double-stops
SOLO CELLO
13- A robust piece played out in small bursts of energy. Nice.
VIOLIN AND CELLO
Filled with elegant frills and counterpoint, a showcase for the violin.
14- Careful start.
15- Swooping and slowly aggressive
16- Quiet
17,18- Fast and stabbing, then a fast gentle swirl
19,20- Grand swoops
21,22,23- Dire wanderings. Gets tense and dark. Serene finale.
