Amazing collection of early 60’s garage from the Northeast, upstate NY, New England area primarily. Incredible 1960-1964 pre-Beatles, Kinks, post Buddy Holly, Elvis, rockin garage. Less surfy that their western/southwestern counterparts, these tracks are taken from mostly unreleased 45’s. Pure rock in its truest, rawest sense, this genre was effectively buried by “the British Invasion” in ‘64. Excellent liner notes tell the tale of how these bands were mostly teenagers blowing off a lot of steam and getting lots of action in the process, as might be gathered by the screaming-girls-in-the-audience on some of the tracks (no wonder John Kerry was in a garage band at the time). Pure Fender guitar and amp sounds, hard driving drums, kept clean with vocal harmonies and “legless” hollow bass. Ironically the Beatles came out of this scene, but of course went on to take a bunch of drugs and get introspective and philosophical, deep. A lot of people think the Beatles ruined rock and roll forever; this CD might make you believe them.
1) live heavy garage, intense feel
2) twangy guit, shuffling 50’s rock
3) romantic feel, ballady
4) kick ass fuzz tone buried, cool upbeat proto psyche
5) slow dance love waltz instrumental
6) putatively the first American cover of this classic, pretty kick ass w/ girl screams
7) classic feel, surf back beat
8) nice twang/reverb on the guit, instrumental
9) title track, upbeat swingy rock
10) slight western/surf rhythm, storytelling, all cylinders
11) surf beat; feel, but not surf -
I guess theres no surf in that part of the Atlantic
12) 50’s love song vocs, upbeat surf rhythm though
13) basic song, low-fi, slightly minor toned
14) seagull cries, beautiful Fender tones, slow dance with heavy bass tones, just gorgeous
15) live classic, work yo mojo, rocknf*ckingroll
16) killer surf guitar tone to make Dick Dale jealous
17) Beatles’esque boogie rock w/ kick ass guitar tone, hot
18) low-fi simple song, Beatles’ish in the vocal harmonies, taken from a munched tape from the sound of it
