Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey – Walking With Giants
JFJO goes “acoustic” for their latest album. This has got a slick modern piano trio sound which seems to be popular these days, but is a little disappointing considering what these guys can do with electricity. The producer did let them get in one old-school track though, so if you’re looking for some vintage JFJO sounds, start with #9. By far the most impressive part of the disc is the sound bassist Mathis gets from bowing his acoustic bass run through an octave pedal. Wow. The tunes show the love to Monk and Hancock and the solos are the highlight as always.
1. Speedy and disjoint
*2. Cool bass effects lead the way
*3. Klezmer sounding melody, nice solos
4. Sentimental ballad
5. Starts moody, then speeds up to bouncy modal swing
*6. Pretty ballad
**7. Cool descending Monk-like riff
8. Wistful modal piece
**9. Wild funky bass with intense piano & drums
10. Funky riff meanders and finally fades out
11. World music vibe with sitar
*12. Funky ragtime, with plenty of tempo stretching back and forth
13. Passionate ballad
