Napalm Death – Leaders not Followers: Part 2 (Century Media)
Long running (1986) grindcore inventers Napalm Death do all cover songs. This is ND’s tribute to all the punk, hardcore, crossover, thrash, and death metal that has influenced them over the years. This covers a lot of those sounds but all given the fast Napalm Death grindcore treatment.
**1. Fast crossover thrash done great by ND. Fun headbanging thrash.
2. A band I’m not familiar with. More crusty sounding punk sounding.
3. Thrash-y with some interesting start and stops. Imagine a grindcore version of Anthrax.
4. A metal classic done faithfully.
5. Old noisy crusty hardcore done faithfully.
**6. Great opening riff that takes me back to the mid-80s when I first heard this song. . Pure thrash metal. Fast.
7. Short, crusty hardcore done just slightly heavier.
**8. Siege are one of the more influential bands that released VERY little music. Track starts slow and then goes into hardcore chaos. GREAT! Even catchy.
9. Straight forward thrash/death metal
**10. Nice heavy death metal riff into speedy chaotic death metal with lots of short, chaotic guitar solos. Fuck yea!
11. Thrash to band your head to.
**12. Another raw punk/hardcore cover including a short bass breakdown and guitar solo.
13. Heavy, with more of a modern sound. Headbanging breakdown like the old thrash bands.
14. Speedy messy thrash. This has a very bay area thrash feel to it. (Exodus, Testament, etc).
15. I was surprised to see this band covered on there which is cool. Punk with a hockey theme sound in the guitars done ripping ND style.
**16. Wow! One of the better Sepultura songs done great. Heavy guitar riff into a big gallop. I love the original and ND don’t venture far from it. Death Metal meets thrash meets grindcore.
**17. Another cover that was a pleasant surprise. One of the classic, obnoxious, “offensive” punk/hardcore/metal bands from the past played only slightly heavier.
**18. Old 80s hardcore done even faster! Fast and short!
**19. Fuck yea. One of the first fast songs I ever heard in my life. It’s about 30 seconds long, ripping fast and a song from 1985. When I heard this song in 1985 it changed my views on music.
Excellent stuff that brings back lots of memories. -mph
