Very exciting first full-length album by new Warp artist Jimmy Edgar. He’s developed a completely original sound: somewhere between Electro, R&B (!), and the old Detroit-techno style. The sound is very sparse and clean, with intricately layered beats. He also uses a lot of space in his beats to really draw you in. This is an exceptionally sexy disc. PLAY IT! Especially: 1, 4, 6
1) Broken (R&B?) beats and pulsing synths with monotone rapping. Hits of jarring noises and sped up beats let us know this track belongs on Warp. 2) The most electro of the tracks. Just simple tapping beats with a weaving melodic synth line. Very chilled. 3) Ambient R&B?? Clean snare hits and a making “chick” noises form the beat, sparse piano hits form a warm spacey backing and synths come in occasionally to drop melodic ideas. My only complaint is that it drags on a bit long. 4) Easily one of my top few favorite electronic tracks of the year. Ultra sparse broken-beat electro. A simple melody is weaved in and out on pulsing synths with just snare and bass hits to form the beat. He rocks the beat and melody like a bop saxophonist, leaving space in all the right places and complicating the rhythms more and more. Captivates the attention from start to finish. 5) Another R&B/electro beat but slightly harsher and more cut up. Distorted, cut up spoken word is layered on top. 6) A warmer fuller beat with lots of synth melodies and then beautiful edited vox. A really chilled, colorful sound. Think John Beltran making electro with the precision of Squarepusher. Extremely sexy.
