Thollem is kind of a jazz pianist/singer but with a distinctly oddball bent. Like cabaret music but with fast aggressive piano, verbose lyrics, and lots of melodrama. Louden Wainwright III on speed. Great stuff.
Thollem's playing is unique -- derived from jazz, with a hyperactive attitude and densely packed twists and turns. Crystal clear and not at all sloppy. Accompanied by Rick Rivera on drums. The songs are fun, if a little surreal, and the instrumentals are really cool (4,9).
- Rapid-fire lyrics and a strong beat
- Choppy main theme, lots of crashing moments
- Fast patter
- Fast piano patter after a restrained drum solo
- Crashing and crazy. Simple, happy melody; morbid lyrics
- Like a mini-musical. Often big and loud
- Insane, fast. Vaguely sexual theme.
- Bluesy strut. Same title as #3 but way different
- "Real jazz" piano, fast start then calms down
- Jaunting, swaggering cabaret feel
- Fast and crazy; includes a really long, near-silent gap
- Often quiet while still fairly fast. Nice drum fills.
- Slowish, dramatic. In Spanish.
