Paul Brady – Say What you Feel – Compass Records

Mediocre folk with some country/gospel/soft rock feel to it. The album is bottom-heavy: tracks 8-12 are all decent. *Track 3 has the most energy with 10 in a close second – both are the highlights of the album.* The vocals and lyrics aren’t bad, but the best part of the music is the Hammond organ that shows up relatively often. FFC Clean.
1. Smile (3:52) – Mid-tempo acoustic guitar strumming and piano. Solo male vocals. Optimistic song about the power of a smile.
2. Don’t Try to Please Me (3:19) – Up-beat, same guitar/piano, additional male vocals (both deeper and higher). Song about genuine vs. disingenuous love.
3. * Love In A Bubble (3:06) – Driving, mid-tempo song with plenty of energy. Features a Hammond organ (and a lyrical reference to it), backing vocals, rock instrumentation. Describes a day spent with a new acquaintance.
4. I Only Want You (3:52) – Slow love song with guitar/piano and only Brady singing. Some simple, pretty guitar picking in addition to the typical strumming.
5. Living For The Corporation (4:07 – Mid-tempo song w/ a slow feel about the meaningless of working in corporate America. His insights aren’t particularly original but the lyrics are decent.
6. Say What You Feel (4:11) – Titular track – love song with self-explanatory title. Up-tempo, more Hammond organ but with a different feel. Has some 80s sound, some gospel, but I don’t think it works too well.
7. Locked Up In Heaven (4:24) – Down-tempo, simple song. Brady does all the music on this track, including some cheesy/pretty electric piano playing. Lyrics as well are both pretty and a little corny.
8. * Sail, Sail On (4:27) – Mid-tempo song starts simple with acoustic strumming, then adds electric guitar, organ, etc. Some backing vocals. Chorus is highlight. Lyrics describe the disease of modern-day living.
9. * The You That’s Really You (4:06) – Mid-tempo countrified song about the strange effects of love. Solid vocals (including backing harmonies) and piano/organ playing.
10. * Doin’ It In The Dark (4:30) – Up-tempo, driving song that critiques Americans, modern life in general, etc. Starts w/ electric and acoustic guitars, solid instrumentation throughout. Organ solo in the middle! Nice lyrics.
11. Beyond the Reach of Love (4:34) – Mid-tempo song about dying love. Includes some nice ukulele work and a string section (prominent towards the end). Solid vocals and decent lyrics.
12. (4:11) – The Man I used to Be – A more down-tempo song about love of the past. Song has a Van Morrison feel through the sax/horn work, lyrics and even vocals at times. Decent song overall.
