What can I say, I’m a sucker for oddball dissonant danceable angular punk rock (yes, that’s a lot of adjectives). Think Murder City Devils, Birthday Party, mixed in with some Dischord bands; but despite the influences and similarities, these guys still have their own unique sound. Great strange melodies and fun rhythms, these seven songs definitely leave me wanting to hear more. Demented weirdness with horror movie imagery, and you gotta love the theremin. Play! My picks: 1,3,4
*1- let’s boogie! vocals bounce all over, from distorted to falsetto to yelled. Very catchy playful melody on keyboard. Very nice way to start things off.
2- short instrumental track featuring a slow melody on a melodica
*3- continues the slow melody from the previous song, whispered/growled singing, erupts half-way through, creepy circus-like awesome-ness. Is horror-folk a genre yet?
*4- harsh guitars, warped but catchy, has a sing-along “Ba ba da da da wa waa” which they then proceed to mash-up and distort
5- normal-er singing, great windy guitar, midtempo
6- driving angular rock, very cool
7- similar to last, interesting musically, ends with a minute to go and then goes into a reprise of the mashed up sing-along from track 4
