Drummer Eisenstadt manages to produce some unconventional sounds within a free-jazz context. The brass-heavy quintet -- two trumpets and cornet -- makes for lots of loud, bold tones and/or scratchy quiet improvising (the trumpets producing a drier, stiffer sound than a sax when placed in quiet quarters).
Compositions tend to be minimalist, with multiple players carving simple pulses or even one repeated note (N.B. "minimalist" doesn't mean "quiet" -- this is often brash, kicking stuff). That contributes to the fresh sound of the CD but can get on your nerves, too.
- Jazzy monochrome pulses. Spare at first, gets into a swingy space halfway through. Lots of scribbly improv thorughout.
- Quiet start builds to improv jam, lots of fast-flowing lines
- Fast, punchy, dramatic (a climbing-scale theme early on), into an African-influenced jam
- Quiet swampy sounds, fairly fast pace
- Lots of fast but spare soloing; bright and jumpy overall
- Reprise of #2, but more fierce
- A fairly fast, popping theme
- Reprise of #5, brighter. First trumpet solo packs more.
