Cadillac Jones - Galaxy Galore (7", 45 RPM)
bing (chris.kzsu@gmail.com)
6-piece instrumental heavy funk band from atlanta featuring
alto/tenor/bari sax, guitar, drums, bass, electric piano,
and turntables. jazzy and funky with influences including
coltrane, herbie hancock, and the crusaders. from their
site: "the band combines driving rhythms, tight melodies,
and improvisational jams to create a sound that grinds the
hips and tickles the mind." proud to be "jazz musicians, funk
revivalists, and badass seventies hipsters."
PICK: side A
NO FCCs
side A (4:11) - catchy uptempo funk, main melody somewhat
reminiscent of "chameleon" by herbie hancock. old-school
spacey scifi soundbites are interspersed between instrumental
sections. peppy horn lines, funky guitar comping, spacey
beeps and bloops in background. guitar solo. false ending around
3:40.
side B (3:53) - live performance with minimal audience noise. a
fairly conventional cover of dizzy gillespie's "night in tunisia".
uptempo, loopy syncopated bassline, sparse guitar comping.
lush, detailed drum/bongo work. basically a sax orgy, pretty
catchy sax lines and arrangement but slightly overdone with the
trills and runs. alto/tenor sax solo followed by a cool drum/sax break.
