Kylesa – To Walk a Middle Course (Prosthetic)
A unique heavy rock sound that mixes hardcore, metal, punk, stoner rock, and crust. It’s down-tuned guitars playing heavy riffs not unlike some older Neurosis, 3 vocalists, one female, and a huge lurching apocalyptic sound. There is plenty of melody, usually from the guitars and vocals you can understand. This is their 2nd album and they are from Savannah, Georgia.
**1. Starts and ends with quiet noise. Medium paced with lots of changes and many different sounds in the vocals. First male screaming that you can’t understand, and then screamed female vocals you can understand, then all 3 vocalists singing a chorus you can understand. Even spoken gothy female vocals. Great!
2. More metal sounding with odd somewhat spoken male vocals. Female vocals do some great screamed vocals you can understand. Also ends with some quiet drone.
3. Begins quiet. Discordant, lurching, with each vocalist taking a turn.
4. Drifting quiet electronics into clean guitar notes. Slow, somewhat simple with female vocals. Picks up the pace halfway through the track and almost reaches thrash. Then the track goes through another change for the last minute.
**5. Quiet guitar to start with a slow buildup which changes into melodic guitar (octaves?) and clear male vocals. One of the slower more melodic tracks but I really like it.
**6. Faster and heavier with both male and female vocals. Heavy chug with guitar solo at the end.
**7. One of their faster tracks which is very headbanging inducing. Metal riffs.
**8. Starts with just drums into a lurching catchy sound. A handful of changes and repeated riffs. This is one of my favorite tracks that they do live. Metalish with some stoner rock sounds.
**9. Longer track with quiet bass and guitar intro. Vocals become center stage but the music stays quiet. It’s almost 2 minutes into the track before it gets heavy.
Great stuff but not as good as the last record. -mph
