Complex, heavily textured glitch-hop/ambience. Imagine mixing the latest Bola and David Last albums (recently on A-File). Autechre-ish, but less mechanical. There's some poignant quality of human emotion that resonates through the swirling, murky drones. It's not exactly "sad" per se, but something is definitely disturbing about the whole thing. Gritty fuzz, windy sounds, semi-melodic electronic moans speak of haunting landscapes. This would work well as a soundtrack to a solo trek across the Sahara Desert, or a walk through an abandoned city. "Trying to Remember" is a perfect title – maybe this portrays the experience of suffering from memory degeneration?
Not the most accessible stuff, but interesting... and sometimes beautiful.
Recommended Tracks: 3, 6, 8, 10
- Captain Dee, May 2005
1. Fuzzy static, deep ambience. Hints of a beat, but never fully develops. (3:53)
2. Windy feel, mid-tempo beat. Fucked up breathing-like sounds. Melodic series of slow pulses. (5:53)
*3. Rhythmic bits of ambience, drones, and fuzz congeal into a methodical head-nodding jam with a tight glitch-hop beat. Intricate, gorgeous stuff. (5:25)
4. Echo-y interlude of melody over fuzz, continues into next track. (0:39)
5. Ominous background, distant chimes, understated beat, loud/grainy rushes of air. Gradually trails off, abrupt end. (5:37)
*6. Strong bounce-y beat, fucked-up echo-y horns that sound like Wookies. Pieces of whispering, slow melody. Exotic vibe. Dope! (6:28)
7. Amorphous electronic bells, drones, skittering industrialized beat. Song takes on more form after pretty ambience/melodies kicks in. (6:48)
*8. Pulsing drone, crisp mechanical IDM beat. Drone later replaced by ethereal ambience/vocal melody. Last few minutes are totally ambient. (7:03)
9. Crunchy skitters, hollow beat, fuzzed out synths, organ-like ambience. Later, haunting piano fragments. (5:37)
*10. Slowly growing ambience, like muffled jet engines with sustained ethereal electronics, peaceful xylophone-ish melody. Fades out. Lovely! (6:23)
