LES NUBIANS Present “Echoes, Chapter One"
Triloka, 2005
An intoxicating poetry slam (in French and English), with heavy dollops of hiphop, smooth r&b, and even a touch of jazz mixed in. Half a dozen poets contribute, but the French soul duo Les Nubians are at the helm, and sing on 5 tracks. The set, which includes a few live tracks, is divided into four themes: Motherland (1-6), Urban City Life (7-13), Love Stories (14-17), and Spiritual Human Nature (18-21). They keep it FCC-clean but cut it close in a few spots. Deep poems, tasty grooves, good stuff.
Play #11 right now! Then try: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 15, 19
1. 1:03 – somber French spoken word with hand drum/tribal atmospheric backing
2. 3:35 – m/f duet English poem, jazz bass & percussive loops, and a bit of singing
3. 3:35 – fem French soulful singing/spoken word w/African rhythms & loops
5. 3:49 – pretty French song w/acoustic guitar, hand drums, thumb piano, fem vox
6. 5:36 – live English fem freestyling, strong, spiritual, feminist w/jazzy backing
7. 1:53 – fast religious poem, many old testament/rastafarian references, good beat
8. 2:55 – flowing French m/f conversation, chill background
9. 2:26 – live smooth/retro French r&b. too short to be effective.
10. 4:52 – deadpan fem English poem about NYC, sinister jazzy bass loops
11. 3:43 – I love this! Flowing male French lead with gorgeous fem backing vox, and a nice nice summer-day soul start-stop groove. Oooooh…damn!
12. 4:57 – remixed French r&b, quick beats but still sort of mellow, nice duo vox
13. 3:54 – a continuation of #8, now with a bass-heavy backing & electrical noises
14. 4:09 – English poem (ick), slow-jam backing w/strings, horns, acoustic guitar
15. 3:00 – live fem love/sex poem (English) with jazz combo, great crowd reaction
16. 2:28 – male French spoken-word over slow-jam; so sexy it’s rather silly.
17. 4:34 – fem English poem about love & death, sad soul backing, 2nd half sung
18. 2:28 – male French spoken word, sinister atmosphere. A bit disturbing.
19. 7:08 – moody r&b jam, fem English freestyle poem is abstract but captivating, gets into a sort of roots-reggae vibe at one point, then jazzy.
20. 3:33 – smooth r&b, lots of flute, fem English vox… like a more intellectual Sade
21. 1:23 – somber french spoken word, windswept/blasted atmosphere with violin
