Guitar-led trio (plus guests) doing modern bebop with twisty writing and lots of room for creative soloing. Accessible stuff with a nice element of swing and rhythm but no fear of untethered free passages. Points of reference: Musillami's other CD, Fonda/Stevens Group, Tom Christensen.
1- Loping, odd-time theme. Upbeat and askew. One quiet stretch of sparse abstract improv.
2- w/sax, a buzzy modern bop that turns blazing and free
3- A bright epic with an expanded band (piano, trumpet, sax).
Starts dour, moves into fast chaos, then energetic jazz blowing
4- Fast, with jumbly piano and guitar solos
5- Midtempo, playful. Mostly a sparse feel.
6- Grand swirling midtempo with waves of piano, recalling McCoy Tyner's late-'60s stuff.
7- Midtempo and swingy, quietly happy
