Traditional bebop date recorded in an intimate small-club setting. The crowd sounds close and shouts out their approval, like you'd hear on some '60s-recorded Paris date. Long track times reflect the session's energy -- nice long, open solos.
Yes, it's a retro sound, but it's a well-played and warm session that shows a lot of heart. Wynton is often accused of playing with lots of polish and little humanity, but here he shows some rough edges that make his playing downright charming -- check the solo early in #1. The live setting is important -- in the studio, this music would probably come across formulaic and indifferent.
1- Mid/fast with a sneaky intro and clever, playful solos
2- Mid/fast and casual. Everyone gets a solo.
3- Slow
4- GAAAAA! fast.
5- Playfully quiet start, very cute. Into louder mid/fast
6- New Orleans stomp, really happy
