John “Juke” Logan – The Truth Will Rock You (Mocombo)

Fun songs that range from true blues to rockabilly to Latin beats. Logan sings (rather nondescript vocals) and plays a decent mouth organ. Lots of talented guests, songs are well-written. Nothing ground-breaking, but nothing that don’t sound good, either. Dude’s got his heart in the right place.
FCC: track 13 “Money talks, bullshit walks” (several times). I like 1, 7, 9 and 11 best.
1. 2:47 **Starts with spoken “Oh yeah”, then funky midtempo blues beat. Fun song, a few spoken asides.
2. 2:59 uptempo rocker, a hair’s breadth from rockabilly
3. 5:17 slow Chicago-style blues, boozy lyrics, music stops for emphasis at ends of verses
4. 5:15 slow mambo beat, a bit of fake courtroom banter.
5. 2:59 *rockabilly/lindy hop, girl backup chorus, walking bass, Nick Curran guests on guitar.
6. 5:53 slow late-night blues with prominent guitar by Johnny Moeller.
7. 3:19 **starts with spoken banter and countdown for a few seconds, breaks into uptempo rocker with prominent piano, vocal harmonies (almost a duet with Stephanie Riggio).
8. 5:00 starts with ancient sounding guitar and solo vocals, breaks into midtempo blues stroll. Very classic blues sound. Logan cuts loose on harmonica, both Gary Primich and Nick Curran guest on guitars.
9. 4:53 **midtempo cha-cha groove, stops and switches briefly to a sort of two-step shuffle for chorus and breaks, then back.
10. 4:12 *slow blues instrumental with the Leroi Brothers, perfect for dancing real, real close. Some VERY tasty guitar/harmonica licks.
11. 4:04 **starts with countdown in French, mardi gras percussion building slowly into some kind of blues/Nawlins fusion that actually works quite well. Tempo builds a bit at end, then slow fade.
12. 4:59 *Starts with “police” knocking, then downtempo blues, Nick Curran on guitar, fun lyrics.
13. 4:48 FCC: bullshit X several. Midtempo rocker, cool backup vocals.
14. 6:15 slow and very sad sounding (actually a love song). Maybe it’s the steel guitar that makes it sound so weepy.
15. 1:18 short reprise of track 1, samples of Albert Collins talking.
