Way cool world popular music comp with a definite agenda. The theme is political - musically it's all over the map (ok, literally as well) and many styles are represented. Definitely in the modern/popular vein, mostly pretty loud and bouncy for the first half. 9 and 10 are pretty and less bouncy, the last four (mostly American) numbers are IMO unnecessary.
No FCC. My faves are 2, 3, 8, but the whole first half rocks.
1. 3:31 *uptempo, bouncy guitar-based romp. Manu Chao sings and Tonino Carotone echoes words.
2. 4:00 **starts with live concert sounds. Song is uptempo and aggressive, as befits a Clash cover. A few seconds of applause at end. Band is British South Asians.
3. 3:58 **cool midtempo, driving sycopation. Rap in French, very traditional Arabic singing and Rai-ish chorus.
4. 4:28 *Another Clash cover with heavy accent. Horn flourish, cool Eastern European marching band bounce, alternating with spacier groove.
5. 3:23 uptempo and jazzy, in English, pretty typical Femi.
6. 7:21 live concert sounds for at least a minute, then ska instrumental. Unless you want to go through the effort of cueing past the intro, I'd skip itÅ
7. 3:28 *SOOO Scratch! Fun, bumpy, w/ crazed vocals.
8. 4:22 **mid-to-downtempo but forceful dub in what sounds like African creole. Keep your eyes on this guy.
9. 3:02 sweet samba groove, vocals in French. Middle Eastern background only evident in instrumental solo.
10. 4:23 pretty, downtempo, rather sad-sounding, with Salif Keita's distinctive sweet high tenor and acoustic strings, no drums.
11. 6:34 uptempo syncopation with "elevator jazz" instrumentation and vocals.
12. 3:39 random noises intro, slow American folk-pop.
13. 3:54 slow American adenoidal whining with a few bloopy noises.
14. 3:58 slow British space/electronica/hip hop.
15. 3:49 starts slow, then gets into midtempo bump. Somewhat mysterious electronica/experimental/trance instrumental.
