Solo piano with rich tones of traditional jazz peppered with tangential runs and free/avant frills scattered like punctuation -- like a crazier Art Tatum (Art would pause a song here and there to display an overly long run). This has a storytelling feel and while it admittedly wades into the deep end, it's accessible.
Gayle is better known as a saxophonist, but the piano was his first instrument. Check out his "Jazz Solo Piano" CD in the library.
1- Warm, homey stepping after a grand entrance. Gets tangly.
2- Quiet start, delicate. Tangly speed in the second half.
3- A pleasant walk interrupted by gusts of Cecil Taylor
4- N'Orleans blues, gospel warmth. A smiling slow strut
5- Quick & twisty, into disjoint boogie-woogie. Fast & crazy later
6- Stern, near-classical feel. Warmer later on: casual tempo but hard-pounded notes
7- Gentler but still mid/fast, a thoughtful piece
