Album Review

Solo saxophone, abstract stuff. Experiments from a great local player. It's all done on one horn, with Greenlief exploring a variety of sounds and strategies, kind of like notebook sketches. It seems to be subtitled, "Memory, Improvisation, and the Developing Language of the Saxophone" -- an apt description. Dedicated to his parents; there's a cute explanation that's worth transcribing here:

"The horn I am playing and have always played (an old Buescher from the late 1950s) is the horn my father gave to me nearly 30 years ago.

"These improvisations are for my parents, who greatly encouraged me musically and were themselves music lovers.

"The title of this record comes from an event that is linked to my first memory: Our house burned down when I was about two years old due to a fried electrical circuit in the wall behind my crib. As the story was told to me, I was the first to notice."

1- High bird-call scribbles
2- Cool sound, like crumping paper and toneful sax pops, all at once. Some more conventional buzz and growls later
3- Jagged doodles, not too aggressive. Quiet start.
4- Scratchy, acerbic. Whispered screams later.
5- Fast burbles
6- Quiet
7- LONG tones. Some high, pretty melody later, a nice conclusion
