Mia Doi Todd – La Ninja: Amor and Other Dreams of Manzanita (Plug Research)
On MDT’s last album she got a backing band and shed her minimalist folk sounds for more of an indie pop sound. This is a collection of remixes of songs of that last album. It was by far her worst album and I’m not convinced these remixes do anything to save the songs. Her voice is still stunning but in all honesty I think they picked her worst tracks to remix. What you get are some down-tempo sounding tracks with indie pop leanings and a wonderful voice.
1. Cheap downtempo beat and the vocals sounds slightly processed. I like the background strings and the slide sounding guitar but eh….nowhere near as good as stuff on her first 3-4 albums.
**2. Looped classical wind instruments and piano with the static from the record. These things work amazing with her voice. A strange upbeat beat shows up under her looped voice but doesn’t get in the way too much. The track ends with a loop of just her voice.
3. Not a bad sounding cover of a Beatles song that’s been covered too many times. Don’t straight.
4. A cavernous remix by Dungen. Everything sounds at a distance. Fairly minimal and not that far from the original.
**5. Bells and other toys with minimal piano which sounds jazzy. This all goes away and it’s just simple piano and MDT’s voice. Nice.
6. Funny electronics that don’t seem to go with the tone of her voice at all. Later a cheap beat doesn’t help. Damn, the original of this track is good, the remix only gets in the way.
**7. Interesting quiet, slow down sounding loops with a very slow beat, a burst of noise (!!), small looped vocal snippets.
8. Minimal percussion sounds to go along with her voice.
9. Full downtempo beats and skipping vocals. This sucks.
10. Quiet minimal guitar and her voice. Sounds very nice but drifts a bit.
11. Sounds off in the distance or under water, almost old sounding. The piano sounds more like a toy piano. The vocals are removed, this is an instrumental.
12. Minimal percussion and strings that sounds somewhere between middle eastern and Japanese sounding. Another instrumental.
