Hailing from Seattle, Shoplifting is former members of Chromatics reincarnated. Dischord-rooted 90s sound. Think Dischord bands such as Happy Go Licky and High Back Chairs, and the somewhat Dischord spin-off sound of El Guapo, Q and Not U, and Les Savy Fav. Add a bit of early Blonde Redhead darkness (guit/vocal melodies) and the no-waveness of Erase Errata. And that is half of the record. The other half is the Chromatics' dark/spooky legacy shining through. Kind like the Residents (see track 8) with electro-noise, dog barking and some dub. There's some high energy good drumming in this record. Great drummer. Enjoy!
Play 7, 1, 3, 8, 10
1. This is so Les Savy Fav! Lots of vocal and guitar overdubs creating this hauntingly jangly feeling. High energy.
2. El Guapo-ish with noisy Erase Errata-ish no-wave bass riff. FCCs!!!
3. Emo-ish vocals with lots of guitar angularity. In a way, Fugazi.
4. Sparse. Somber. Dissonant. Angular. Female vox soprano-ing it out.
5. Sparse, minimalist instrumental groove. Percussion/heavy bass. Soothing fluid electro effects. Xenakis.
6. Cool percussion. Almost jazzy and proggy. Noisy.
7. Cool song structure. No wave angular to frenetic Les Savy Favish song with crazy ass noise and really cool drum beats.
8. Electro noise and dub. Dark and quiet. Spooky. In the Chromatics legacy. Dog barking. The Residents.
9. Groovy but yet no-wavey. Dance-y. Erase Errata-ish.
10. Dark vocals and bass lines. Sparse and dubby. Lots of dub delays/effects. Fades into soothing electro effects/noise.
