Romantic early 20th-century chamber music, beautifully played by a young and already pretty-successful string quartet. Highly recommended, especially the Sibelius string quartet. For each composer, the pieces selected deviate from the style they are famous for. For Sibelius (tracks 1-5)- intimate chamber music, very different from his great body of symphonic work. For the more contemporary Stravinsky (tracks 6-8), 3 pieces representing a transition between his early “Primitive”(”Russion”) period (represented by “the Rite of Spring”) to the later Neo-Classic period. For Ravel (9-12), the string quartet is his first chamber music composition, written when he was struggling for recognition (which failed; following submission of this piece, he was expelled from the Paris conservatory).
**1. Mid-tempo and passionate with some dark undertones.
2. Lively and pastoral.
3. Slow and sad.
4. Mid-tempo. Strong ending.
*5. Fast. In the more energetic sections, it’s very strong. A beautiful finale.
6. A Dance-y repetitive piece. Very short.
7. Described by the composer as eccentric. Lots of stops and starts.
8. Slow and gloomy. With lots of very quiet moments.
9. Mid-tempo. Very romantic and pastoral. With more passionate bursts.
*10. Opens with a stormy pizzicato, slows down, and goes back to pizzicato.
11. Very slow.
12. Mid-tempo to fast. Dramatic.
