[coll]: ROUGH GUIDE TO SALSA DURA NYC
World Music Network, 2007
Pretty good compilation of salsa tracks from the New York City scene, mostly recent with a few classics. There’s a good mix of big and obscure names. I could do without #11, but it’s a good time all around.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10
1. 5:22 – steamy midtempo, rolls like a locomotive; nice flute in 2nd half
2. 5:55 – no-nonsense groove, fine vocals, trombone solo
3. 4:40 – strong, chugging groove, great band, serious lyrics (see liner notes)
4. 5:28 – happy sound: bright, crisp horns, upbeat vocal, breaks dig deep
5. 4:50 – good bounce, rolls along with a slightly hard edge
6. 5:47 – awesome big-band groove, fun vocals… gotta love this one!
7. 6:48 – hard groove: hot percussion, strings; solos for piano, trombone
8. 4:30 – upbeat, midtempo, cute touches in the melody and vocals
9. 5:15 – a warm, casual sound: fem vox, nice violin and horn stings
10. 8:15 – great jam with excellent horn solos and percussion… hot!
11. 4:06 – sort of lounge-salsa fusion: croaky vocal & big band
