Lush, dark, romantic rock from Scotland... alternating with Velvet Underground style folk. Male & female vocals. Simple songs... often a bit messy... that are nonetheless beautiful & gripping. This is The Jesus & Mary Chain reunited and sounds like it... but ventures out from there. A fair amount of country rock, retro pop, DIY, and psychedelic motifs woven through these tracks. The band’s name refers to Linda -- Jim & William Reid’s sister, who apparently has super pale skin. She sings on most of the tracks. Play with Freeheat (who are also sort of the Jesus & Mary Chain), The Jesus & Mary Chain, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, The Raveonettes, Woodbine, The Pastels, The Velvet Underground. FCC clean, although 7 is marginal. All tracks strong. Start with 1, 5, 7.
==> 1. Folky & delicate, with female vocals. Gentle like the Pastels (who the lyrics mention) and Woodbine. Starts with solo acoustic guitar. Gets trippy toward end.
2. Dark & rolling. Male vocals. “I’m just like myself... and I don’t think that is good for myself.” Starts with weird processed vocals. Gets sparse toward end, then full band comes back and ends pretty cold on some guitar noise.
3. Psych-rock lullaby with breathy female vocals. “I will try to be someplace else. I will try to be free.” Starts with slide-guitar strum. Ends cold with several seconds of silence remaining.
4. Big Star style country/folk. Male vocals. Starts with a bit of studio ambience, then full band. Slows and fades, then a couple secs of silence.
==> 5. ‘60s soul pop, psychedelicized J&MC style. Male & female vocals. Gets sparse, then ends cold with some guitar grounding hum.
6. Slow, psychedelic, sad ballad. Female vocals. Starts with guitar strums. Ends fairly cold.
==> 7. FCC marginal. Very J&MC (lush, rolling rock) but with female vocals. Lots of repetition of the word “piss.” About drugs and getting over them. “No more winding myself uptight.” Starts with full band. Fades.
8. A driving song with synthetic, messily played melodica. Female vocals, that refers to “psychocandy” (the name of the first J&MC LP) as a noun. Starts with full band.
9. Slow and romantic in a VU kind of way. Female vocals. Lots of maracas. Starts quietly with noises that sort of sound like crickets. Sort of. Male vocals come in at end as track slows. Fades quickly.
10. Upbeat & dancey. Female vocals. This is s cover of a Freeheat song. Starts with drum hits. Fades slowly.
11. Dancey & driving (oh, and dark) with electrobeats. Starts with synth & synth drums. Fades.
12. Bright & energetic. Another Freeheat cover. (I like Linda’s voice here a lot.) “The two of us are getting high.” Starts with full band. Fades.
