SJ Esau – Wrong Faced Cat Feed Collapse
Reviewed by Witz
Experimental Indie Rock. SJ Esau (pronounced “E-Saw) is from Bristol, UK, and in many ways draws from countryman Badly Drawn Boy’s light guitar and mixed instrumental sound. He then adds his own brand of crazy, mixing in sound effects ranging from clocks ticking to slurping from a straw. Often amorphous musical meanderings, “Wrong Faced Cat Feed Collapse” provides a number of interesting songs, bordering on experimental with a keen ear organizing all the arrangements. Sounds like: The Album Leaf, Badly Drawn Boy, The Go! Team, Explosions in the Sky.
FCC CLEAN
1) Intro instrumental with clock and various other sounds. (0:32)
**2) Acoustic guitar explodes into distorted vocals, guitars, and violin. (3:41)
3) Slow and amorphous, sounds like The Album Leaf. (3:36)
**4) Rhythmically hypnotic, horns, guitar, and drums start soft and explode. (3:39)
5) Gliding, airy instrumentals that somehow devolve into a frenzy of sound. (5:25)
6) 7 seconds of noise. (0:07)
7) 6 seconds of synth. (0:06)
8) A little crazy clinking of guitar and bass. Repeating round of words. (1:44)
*9) Upbeat, head nodding song with solid vocals. Ends with :30 of noise. (3:10)
10) Plodding and soft—tuba sound as bass-line. Hypnotic. (4:31)
*11) Inexplicable acoustic guitar ditty. Catchy and quick. (2:05)
12) Cloudy, soft, dragging instrumentals. Possibly clarinets. (5:48)
