BILL CHARLAP TRIO: Live at the Village Vanguard

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Everything about this album is clean, crisp and impeccable. Pianist Charlap leads 9 swinging performances of old standards in an album that sounds like the cream of the 1950s, only with better microphones. An excellent example of the classic piano trio.

1. 4:33 – uptempo cool-swinger: quick ‘n’ breezy solos
2. 6:52 – lazy ballad, played straight and oh so gently
3. 3:58 – solid bounce with a happily swinging piano solo
4. 6:16 – speedy, with playful piano, warm bass solo
5. 6:17 – slow ballad, feels stretched out, like it could break
6. 7:30 – rushed bebop tempo, light drums, everybody takes a breakneck solo
7. 7:22 – after-hours ballad: slow, hushed, delicate
8. 5:27 – upbeat waltz, spins lightly around the room
9. 6:24 – warm ballad, slow and gentle, like a sigh
