JOE LOVANO & HANK JONES: Kids
Blue Note, 2007
Straight-ahead piano/sax duets from a pair of true masters, recorded live at Lincoln Center's "Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola" in April 2006. The music is swinging and intimate. Jones, age 87, brings a classic, elegant touch to the keys, and Lovano is at his most lyrical on tenor sax. This is a happy, eminently likeable mainstream set.
All tracks are similar, all are very nice. The last 3 are probably the best.
1. 8:34 – relaxed tempo: piano steps lightly, sax skips merrily along
2. 5:37 – upbeat, mildly boppish: sax flurries, thick piano stew
3. 8:08 – warm ballad: lovely piano solo, gently soulful sax
4. 6:35 – relaxed, wandering melody: inviting piano daydream, singing sax
5. 4:05 – playful bop classic: long sax lines, colorful piano chords
6. 7:33 – mellow ballad, as warm as a thick, fuzzy blanket
7. 7:34 – relaxed: the piano’s a bit bluesy and sax has a little growl in it
8. 4:19 – solo piano: a classic sunny show tune slowed down
9. 2:46 – solo piano: lightly swinging and very, very classy
10. 5:54 – lively midtempo Monk tune: sax digs in a bit, optimistic piano
11. 8:27 – gorgeous, slow, stately: serious soprano sax, gentle piano chords
