Another set of futuristic jazz led by vibraphone and the cool-snap drumming of leader John Hollenbeck, adorned by accordion and clarinet. Often atmospheric and almost "RPM" sounding, and even has a sense of fun (just look at the title to the first track). And then you've got exceptions, like the total spazz-out on #5.
Drew Gress (bass)
John Hollenbeck (drums, percussion, electronic tape)
Matt Moran (vibes; vocals on 6)
Ted Reichman (accordion)
Chris Speed (clarinet, sax)
1- Midtempo chugging rhythm. Digs in a bit more after the first 3 minutes.
2- Calmly fast, starting off in long confusing riffs. Simplifies later but still has lots of counterpoint layers. FALSE ENDING comes with about 2 slow minutes remaining.
3- Lazily shuffling riff, lots of counterpoint with the vibes/drums. Loosens up and dissolves into an electronics swirl. Gains force for the finale.
4- Slowish, with some glassy effect on vibes at first. Settles into a decent slow groove.
5- Frenzy of drums, accordion spasms.
6- Eerie slow burbling, single words spoken randomly, calmly.
7- A slowish progression setting up a nicely involved clarinet solo. Second half: Upbeat mutation of an old lite-rock hit
8- Minimalist droning, into a fast but calm groove with soothing mallet drums and a clarinet solo. Ends slow.
