DEWEY JACKSON: Live at the Barrel, 1952
Delmark, 2007

TRADITIONAL JAZZ – Practically unknown outside of St. Louis and collectors’ circles, Jackson was a hard-hitting trumpeter who cut only a few records in the 1920s (this raw live recording literally triples his discography). Rollicking music captured as it was really performed, in a noisy club with rough transitions, everyone stepping on each other and no 3-minute limit. Great fun, but beware of awkward track endings.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 6

1. 4:54 – brash, fast and loose
2. 5:58 – loosey-goosey stomp
3. 4:04 – barely-controlled bounce
4. 5:04 – great lowdown drag!
5. 3:10 – happy uptempo stomp
6. 8:22 – relaxed, expressive blues
7. 4:53 – upbeat, lots of transitions
8. 3:55 – ragtime feature for piano
9. 6:03 – revival-meeting stomp
10. 4:32 – upbeat, crowd noise
