LARKIN GRIMM - "The Last Tree" CDR (Secret Eye)
Beautiful lofi free folk. LARKIN GRIMM is one person but there are 12 people who guest on different tracks. She sings, plays guitar, dulcimer, bells, chimes, wall, floor, bass, flute, pennywhistle, whistling, and drums. Each track is recorded in a different location with mostly different people and there is even a track where you can hear the rainstorm that's going on. Tracks are patient, slow, dreamy, sometime experimental. There are a good number of non-traditional environmental sounds that are used, including a person barking, a chair, slaps, orgasm, and a 7 year old. Most of the music is a backdrop to her voice and the pictures she paints with it.
**1. Cowbell and mandolin to go along with a couple guitars. A really nice chorus, "close your eyes and follow me, into the woods". Multiple female vocalists harmonize. And the track is slightly morbid. "someday the last tree will fall, and kill us all".
2. A lot more silence and quiet parts. A lot more extended voice technique type singing of non-words. Sounds like just one guitar. Gets aggressive and noisy towards the end.
**3. A murder ballad of sorts. Simple guitar with restrained rambling vocals. "he turned into so many monsters in my arms" and "I killed someone out in the woods, I killed someone".
4. Tribal with multiple female vocalists loosely wandering around coming together for "where is the light, where is the light."
**5. Beautiful acoustic guitar and a more structured sounding long song. Lyrics are a bit hippy and simple but the melody is beautiful and the pacing great. The track is long but worth it. Sticks to mostly acoustic guitar and voice.
**6. Discordant strings, multiple female vocalists, some string instrument that sounds somewhere between a harp and a koto. Lots of breath noises, inhales, almost moans (that must be the orgasm) and a few slapping sounds. Slightly demented sounding. Almost Tuvan throat signing at the end.
**7. Slightly more up beat and clearly folky. Kind of a kids song with a 7 year old singing along. Whistling, multiple string instruments, pennywhislte all about the moon and sun.
8. The 7 year old wrote some of these lyrics. The music is a bit darker and out with something that sounds like an electric instrument. That wounds like the rainstorm in the background.
**9. Another track with a kid singing. Short. Great.
**10. More traditional folk/old timey sounding. "I'd rather trust in the heart of a killer, than believe all the lies in a scholars brain".
11. Slight country feeling, banjo, multiple female vocalists. Almost foot stomping.
12. Lots of whistles making noise. She revisits lyrics from an earlier track. Sounds like a noisy reprise of track 5.
