KUHN/BEKKAS/LOPEZ: Kalimba
ACT, 2007
WORLD/JAZZ – Cool blend of modern European jazz and Moroccan desert blues, with German pianist/saxophonist Joachim Kühn alongside Moroccan Majid Bekkas on oud, guembri and vocals, plus Spanish drummer Ramon Lopez. There’s a hushed feel to many tracks, but the trio also builds up to moments of passionate intensity.
All good... Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 8, 10
1. 6:02 – relaxed modern jazz, bluesy English vocals, rolling piano solo
2. 5:56 – low desert groove, Arabic vocals, speeds up, fast trance ending
3. 8:53 – starts quiet; sneaky modern jazz, mystery piano over steady pulse
4. 4:49 – delicate kalimba / piano with light percussion, relaxed vocal
5. 6:18 – catchy walking melody, soaring vocal, nice drums!
6. 4:49 – moody jazz with an exotic harmonic touch, speedy breaks
7. 4:19 – low desert walk, nice oud soloing, slows down in second half
8. 10:14 – free improvisation, Moroccan tune emerges, vox, skronky sax
9. 3:03 – gently uplifting piano and croaky vocal, bittersweet sound
10. 8:20 – dense piano intro, propulsive jazz sound, very good piano & drums
