Copperpot – WYLA? (“What You Lookin At?”)
Reviewed by Sadie O., 8/22/07
Non-gangsta Hip Hop, rather minimalist but interesting productions with lots of guest rappers. Some old school influences, even a bit of dancehall/reggae. Much of the rap is about bringing hip hop back to more conscious rapping.
WARNING – it claims to be FCC-clean but it SOOO isn’t!
Tracks 2, 3 and 10 are riddled with FCCs and track 13 has a few too.
Tracks 5-7 and 11 are GREAT.
1. 3:37 ***random sounds and KRS-One intro for a few seconds, then midtempo straightforward beat and random sounds, constant rap. Not much depth to the riddim, but fine rapping (duh!)
2. 3:39 constantly repeated FCC – “shit” ***nice relaxed midtempo riddim, a bit old school, a bit chunkier sound than track 1.
3. 3:59 often repeated FCCs – “fuck bitches” “wack shit” **a bit downtempo with squeepy noises – again rather minimalist riddim, British accented rap
4. 1:09 **relaxed a bit downtempo organ-driven instrumental, simple and pleasant.
5. 2:59 ****riddim from “I Put a Spell On You”, female vocals – simple and half sung, lots of fun.
6. 3:44 *****string quartet with lots of bass, downtempo and very cool – rap about the decline of rap.
7. 3:33 ****midtempo dancehall delivery from KRS-One.
8. 2:31 *very dreamy sort of circus waltz, pretty and breathy female singing “la la la”… Last 30 secs are extremely quiet and ethereal.
9. 2:38 FCC? May be a single “fuck” ***midtempo beat and squeeps, strong rap.
10. 3:50 FCCs constantly repeated “fucker” ***a bit downtempo and disjointed beat – good, though. Female rap.
11. 4:12 *****Reggae – guitar intro, midtempo bopping skank for a bit, then uptempo dancehall for much of track, remix of track 7.
12. 1:15 *tinkly piano intro, somewhat downtempo intrumental with lots of snippets of sounds.
13. 3:57 FCCs – occasional “fuck” ***starts with all sorts of bits of talking. Minimalist riddim with sort of flutes and calliope… Interesting, strong British rap – really would be great stuff but for a couple of FCCs…
14. 3:39 **starts with bit of B-movie, then lots of glitch and fuzz and slow cobbled beat, spoken samples. Ends 15 seconds shy.
15. 3:18 **kind of a spastic dance instrumental with odd noises, cobbled instrumental, weird but pretty cool.
