Said the Shark – “Always Prattling on About Wolves”
Always Prattling on About Wolves is an impressive debut album from two gifted female artists (Maya Saxell and Kim Oxlud). Overall, Saxell’s poignant voice makes the album quite memorable. However, the lack of instrumentation makes her voice stand alone to do all the work. Said the Shark is at it’s best when the instrumentation and vocals are more commanding. If this band recruits a few above-average musicians – look out. (BEST TRACKS = 1,4,10,11,12)
1) Strong start. Strumming electric guitar. Hauntingly beautiful female vocals. Harmonizing female vocals make song special.
2) Simple and wonderful sad song. Slowly picked electric guitar. Glockenspiel. Heartbreakingly beautiful harmonizing female vocals. Far away drum. Bells.
3) Slide guitar to begin. Soft vocals again, but Saxell’s voice is sounding more urgent. Shoe-gazer electric guitar at chorus.
4) My favorite! Stronger drums/guitar and louder vocals. Chorus quiets and showcases Saxell’s and Oxlund’s knee-buckling harmonizing power. Slide guitar adds space to this song.
5) Picked acoustic guitar. Subtle piano. Vocals aren’t meeting expectations previously established. Lackluster song.
6) Slow thumping drums. Slide guitar is nice. Vocals are back!
7) Super slow tempo induces sleep. Piano, slide-guitar, and bass drum barely hold this song together. Average.
8) Strumming guitar and livelier drums. Once again, slide guitar and harmonizing in chorus. Lovely music, but starting to become somewhat simple and predictable. Drums and guitar become more powerful towards end (this is a good thing).
9) Dead man walking drum beat. Charming acoustic guitars. Boring.
10) Circus-like drumbeat brings listeners alive! Fun(ner) lyrical delivery is GREAT to hear from Saxell. One of her strongest songs on this album.
11) Lighter song once again! Fluttering piano and bouncy drums. Nice lyrical delivery. Atmospheric sounds during exit are nice to hear.
12) Light guitar and xylophone. STRINGS!!! Best musical composition on the album (why not more?!?). GREAT vocals once again.
