JON HEMMERSAM/DOM MINASI QUARTET
CDM, 2007
INSIDE/OUT JAZZ GUITARS – This disc alternates between straight-ahead and avant-garde jazz, crazy up numbers and soft ballads. The up & out numbers are much stronger, although it’s kind of interesting to hear Minasi play things straight for a change. The twin guitar lines can be mind-boggling at full speed but are also really fluid, backed by beefy, tireless bass and happy-go-lucky but sensitive drumming.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 6 (3, 5, 7 for the ballads)
1. 6:22 – super-speedy: DM rolls, JH picks, freight-train drum solo
2. 9:53 – brisk, lumpy walk: gets knotty, spins out, 2nd half spirited free improv
3. 5:26 – a waltz-like ditty with moments of abstraction; strong bowed bass
4. 7:04 – brooding ballad with wandering feel, nylon-stringed guitar adds air
5. 5:54 – nice lilting ballad, mainstream with just a few out moments on guitar
6. 6:21 – complex 2-guitar intro, inscrutable overlapping layers, good interplay
7. 6:21 – thoughtful, elusive ballad with acoustic 12-string & Spanish guitar
8. 3:37 – skittery 4-way improv (actually the band’s sound check)
9. 7:57 – another ballad, very soft with a slight Brazilian tinge
10. 7:55 – straight up bossa nova, solos are pretty but meandering
