SACO YASUMA: Another Rain

Avant-garde saxophonist, originally from Japan. The music here walks that inside/outside line: it does get pretty wild but just as often holds to an adventurous postbop path. It’s all interesting; I can’t pick favorites.
1. 07:44 – medium propulsion: careful theme, vigorous bass, searching sax
2. 08:39 – bashing, clomping uptempo: cool solos for trumpet, sax, piano
3. 10:13 – strange poetry, calm autumnal sound with riotous breakouts
4. 08:55 – speedy & stormy: sax/rhythm section spar & explode, fast bass solo
5. 07:17 – slow, reedy “world” sound with bamboo sax & melodic percussion
6. 08:01 – interesting chugging postbop, with odd twists & turns, gets busy
7. 03:41 – speedy trumpet & drums, then everybody chatters over each other
8. 02:43 – solo sax, introspective, but pretty aggressive in the middle
9. 10:59 – straight jazz in an strange light: intruiging solos for everybody
