JOSH ROSEMAN: New Constellations
Accurate, 2007
This one is hard to classify – not only does it combine modern jazz, dub and ska in a tribute to Skatalites trombonist Don Drummond, it’s also both a live album and a remix project… the live tapes were sliced & diced in-studio by producers GoodandEvil. Roseman is joined by Peter Apfelbaum on sax and Oakland trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire.
Fo’s Picks: 1 - 5, 8
1. 6:47 – laid-back dub, really nice trombone over atmospheric reggae beat
2. 7:15 – agitated jazz: skittery drums, punchy horns; strong sax, gets trippy
3. 7:27 – uptempo ska beat front & center, good solos for trombone & keys
4. 5:31 – weirdo ska w/ demented touches, plodding tempo, relaxed trombone
5. 5:42 – elastic tempo: trombone wanders over, choppy beat, trippy snippets
6. 7:45 – starts downtempo, gets grooving; good horn interplay, reggae breaks
7. 6:35 – slurring horns jostle with reggae beat & tinkly r&b
8. 5:28 – uptempo ska beat, all three horns get into it
9. 8:37 – moody piano atmosphere, then a clumpy ballad with slow horn layers
10. 4:07 – relaxed version of a reggae classic, played relatively straight
11. 4:52 – “live remix” of #4, puts horns up front & really messes up the riddim
