3 COHENS: Braid
Anzic, 2007
The Israeli-born Cohen siblings (Yuval, Anat & Avishai) have each made waves over the past couple of years, often by fusing modern jazz with world or classical strains. Now all three team up for a straight jazz session. They sound great together – listen for how the three literally “braid” their horn lines into each other. The rhythm section kicks, too.
All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7
1. 5:34 – strong midtempo w/Israeli touch, comes in lapping waves
2. 6:15 – gentle ballad with sweeping highlights, moody sax solos
3. 9:06 – speedy modern bop, high-energy solos all around, great drums
4. 7:23 – subdued ballad, then low sneak w/creeping trumpet, playful piano
5. 3:27 – short & sweet: catchy Latin rhythm, pensive tone, overlapping horns
6. 9:13 – gently rocking flow, emotional horns & piano build, crest, fall back
7. 2:46 – old standard: just the three horns, remarkable interplay!
8. 6:06 – tender, sorrowful ballad: expressive piano & sax solos
9. 6:22 – relaxed intro, then warm, hopeful sound over light latin rhythm
10. 5:22 – rolls with elastic time and an air of unresolved tension; fast middle
