LONNIE GASPERINI: North Beach Blues
Doodlin’, 2007
HAMMOND B3 ORGAN TRIO – With a spare, churchy funk sound inspired by Dr. Lonnie Smith, Gasperini kicks it casually in this set recorded at San Francisco’s Purple Onion club. And check Masami Ishikawa’s poised West Coast guitar grooves. This is a really tight trio.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 6+7, 8, 10
1. 6:18 – cool-toned midtempo boogaloo: turns up the heat oh-so gradually
2. 6:01 – classic-style soul-jazz glide; even-tempered guitar, slow-burn organ
3. 4:32 – light ‘n’ breezy: cute melody with a low-key, casual feel
4. 4:47 – upbeat blues, in-the-pocket, sounds like a signature tune
5. 7:55 – slow standard, slight amp buzz in the mix, but nice ‘n’ gentle
6. 7:00 – slooow, sanctified blues, oozing soul. This is the shit! Leads into…
7. 2:49 – …upbeat revival-meeting stomp, loose & happy
8. 5:35 – quiet, sneaky groove: great high-toned guitar solo
9. 6:07 – breezy retro soul ditty, very ‘60s
10. 6:12 – cool back-alley groove: really nice guitar, organ simple but intense
11. 4:29 – relaxed ballad, good solos with a sort of “vocal” feel
12. 5:06 – straight-up blues groove, keeps an easy tempo, packs some heat
