GONZALO RUBALCABA: Avatar
Blue Note, 2008
MODERN JAZZ – This is a strong set of very modern-sounding postbop jazz, with plenty of melodic and rhythmic complexity creating an edgy feel, particularly in 3 tracks written by sax man Yosvany Terry (1,2,5). Matt Brewer & Marcus Gilmore are just awesome in the rhythm section, while Rubalcaba and the horn players sound totally confident as they spin out dense, dazzling solos. Great stuff.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6
1. 9:43 – delicate intro, then heavy stride with some twisty lines
2. 12:32 – steady uptempo, aggressively tricky rhythm: cool solos all around
3. 13:07 – moody: quiet solo intro, then a thick midtempo ballad
4. 4:09 – calm Horace Silver ballad, relaxed and pretty, nice bass & piano
5. 8:34 – uptempo, rolling urban sound, brainy piano, great horn dialogue
6. 7:07 – intricate melodic motif gets bounced around, reflected, chopped up
7. 10:07 – modern classical piece: careful stepping-stone sound, calm solos
