CATHERINE RUSSELL: Sentimental Streak
World Village, 2008
Wowee! The daughter of Luis Russell (Louis Armstrong’s musical director), Catherine sings obscure old-school swing and blues tunes with a big voice and wonderful flair. This is her second CD, featuring arrangements adapted from old recordings and original sources, with solidly swinging performances by some of the best in the business (Steven Bernstein, Matt Munisteri, etc). Highly recommended!
I love it all! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 14
1. 2:35 – sassy juke-joint swing
2. 3:07 – lazy, kittenish blues
3. 3:06 – bawdy Bessie Smith blues
4. 2:26 – big, bold vox & tasty band
5. 3:21 – slow New Orleans drag
6. 3:21 – fantastic old-time blues
7. 6:08 – slow, romantic, sad
8. 2:47 – smooth, soulful swing
9. 2:57 – cute jive warning
10. 2:56 – lazy, suggestive trad-jazz
11. 3:19 – Willie Dixon blues stomp
12. 3:23 – slow & smoky, great lyrics
13. 5:02 – folksy original tune
14. 2:42 – happy back-porch ditty
