Improvised free jazz in two 20-minute jams. Bright, optimistic workouts with some neat turns by Steve Lacy on sax and Enrico Rava on trumpet and plenty of hard work from the rhythm section. A classic 1966 album rereleased on CD.
Enrico Rava - trumpet
Steve Lacy - soprano sax
Johnny Dyani - bass
Louis Moholo - drums
1- (20:53) A fast light patter throughout, letting up once near -10:20 (a good start/stop point) with a nice abrupt wind-up ending. It's not so intense and crazed as to be out of breath; there's plenty of room here, although Moholo's cymbals keep up a constant chatter that keeps the energy going.
2- (20:57) Similarly light and fast, with a slower start and a more irregular, jagged flow. Moholo again defines things, adding cymbal bursts that seem to push Lacy and Rava into more fierce playing for ephemeral moments (-17:10, e.g.) Last 5 minutes include some cooldown quietness, although the tempo keeps up. Then, another nicely wrapped-up ending.
