AQUILES BÁEZ: La Patilla
Cacao Musica, 2008
Venezuelan jazz and folkloric music with a bright spirit and fine playing. Guitarist Baez has a gentle, lilting approach, and jazz clarinetist Anat Cohen gets lots of space for some lovely solos.
Fo's Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 11, 12
1. 5:20 – midtempo folksy dance, perched between serious and playful
2. 6:49 – hushed ballad, drifts lazily with lyrical solos
3. 3:58 – fast-paced joropo: perky flute takes off; oddball guitar break
4. 4:26 – uptempo, oblique jazz: sax climbs & swings, guitar sniffs & digs
5. 7:02 – swaying romantic ballad; gentle guitar & clarinet
6. 6:55 – festive, folksy romp; soprano sax wimps it out a bit
7. 5:09 – sneaky uptempo jazzy groove, becomes rolling, then angular
8. 6:02 – sunny, open sound: lilting melody and sweeping rhythm
9. 5:33 – brisk improvised guitar/percussion jam, very good
10. 5:34 – sultry latin jazz, starts "lite" but the solos dig in nicely
11. 4:38 – sinuous melody and busy rhythm, calms down in middle
12. 4:52 – tranquil trio ballad with lovely clarinet
