Swedish tech-metal without being super obvious. This is extremely bass and drum heavy. This truly IS “progressive metal”. Instead of cramming a zillion notes they take more of a “slight of hand” (or in this case, “slight of your ears”) approach.
You have to listen pretty close to understand how complex their playing actually is. Guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Mårten Hagström create “maximal minimalism” out of each riff they play. Aggressive vocals and lots of bombast. Overall a pretty solid album by a long running band.
((((1)))) Late 80’s thrash mixed with modern rhythmic sounds (think a much heavier version of Tool) with a ton of bass.
(((2))) Slow, lunging and always building upon the next line of lyrics or riff.
((((3)))) Full stacked riff, huge sound, which comes off a bit cold & mechanical but it, really works.
((((4)))) More down tuned riffs and bass-centered structures. Seems to stay in its own “locked groove” – a metal kind, that is.
(((((5))))) Ridiculously riffy and epic sounding shouted but catchy vocals, and really tricky tempos. (especially after 2:04)
((((6)))) Thudding tempos/riffs and proggy keyboards. Incredible drumming. Plays nicely off of the simple vs. complex time sigs.
(((((7)))) Holy prog-metal! Tons of complicated time sigs mixed with keyboards and aggressive vocals. Excellent but gets a point off for dragging on too long.
(((((8))))) Spinning, dizzyingly fast/techy tempo, pretty wild mix, where everything’s playing at 100% intensity.
((((9)))) Bassy, and very heavy progged out metal. Epic keyboards, epic length but the vocals are kinda average.
