BRAD MEHLDAU TRIO: Live
Nonesuch, 2008
MODERN JAZZ – One of the most influential mainstream jazz artists to emerge in the 1990s, Mehldau continues his breakneck recording pace – this is his 5th release since 2006! Recorded live at NYC’s Village Vanguard, Mehldau’s supple trio plays originals, standards and two rock covers (including a 23-minute version of “Black Hole Sun”).
All good. Fo’s Picks: Disc 1 – 2, 3 Disc 2 – 2, 5, 6
DISC 1
2. 8:45 – easy tempo, very nice bass work, piano struts and gently spins
3. 13:07 – bop: piano cruises straight ahead, breezing thru alternating tempos
4. 10:38 – relaxed, lyrical Brazilian tune, light touches of mystery & irony
5. 9:11 – uptempo waltz, breezily optimistic, many melodic ideas in piano solo
6. 23:31 – way too long, but it works as a jazz tune: starts out quiet & bluesy, bass solo adds steam, piano solo gets abstract; pretty fast by the midpoint, breaks down, very cool drum work near the end.
7. 13:03 – standard ballad: pretty and boozy; second half is lovely solo piano
DISC 2
1. 12:00 – upbeat & very melodic, piano trips lightly over fast drums
2. 10:41 – upbeat & modern: chord changes seem to twist or refract the tune
3. 11:35 – bittersweet tune, gentle Latin rhythm, picks up strength as it goes
4. 16:16 – speedy bebop classic: piano sketches the outlines, long drum solo
5. 12:09 – standard ballad, played with great feeling; second half is solo piano
6. 14:57 – difficult Coltrane tune: long solo intro, then everybody cuts loose
