AMOS HOFFMAN: Evolution
RazDaz, 2008
WORLD/JAZZ - Middle Eastern/North African music as viewed from the fertile New York/Israeli jazz scene. Hoffman plays oud & guitar, and is joined by popular bassist Avishai Cohen. Good grooves matched by compelling serious moments.
All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8
1. 4:43 – bazaar atmosphere, loosens up, switches to rolling uptempo
2. 5:26 – slow moaning tune with flute, speeds up, then spins; strong bass
3. 4:30 – bright folksy sound; floating flute gets going over steady groove
4. 5:44 – serious stepping-stone chords alternate with breezy flow, jazz guitar
5. 3:12 – elaborate solo oud improvisation; introspective and free-flowing
6. 3:01 – attractive, catchy midtempo melody, Hebrew vocal by Cohen
7. 3:42 – like a medley: twisty oud melody against bowed bass, then perc
8. 6:15 – traditional sound & camel-walk rhythm; very cool groove in 2nd half
9. 3:46 – thoughtful ballad with piano; feels a little forced
10. 5:42 – relaxed, flowing melody picks up mystery groove; flute is all over it
